lyrics

the scene is dim
a violin is weeping on the street corner
passers by float arm and arm through the night
in my cold seabed room
without warmth of arms or fire
i fell asleep and a strange metal flower cut me
i woke up crying
i have nothing left for bleeding
and now from my chest
a tarnished blossom blooms
cut it off
my skin is screaming
dig it out
it's cold as knives

the scene outside is now deep and black
the violin shrieks wild and burning
its death rattle runs on fire
down my spine
and this metal flower
odourless as winter
it's cold and bitter
and now there's blood on my fingers
tell me what have i ever done to you?

now you've wound your chain around my neck
i feel your hands in mine
your breath on my lips
you've burnt your circle
black
into my chest
you've branded me sleeping
you've sown my blood
with your metal roses

about

“Clara Engel’s voice comes to me from that deepest of all places, imaginative space, from which she visually retrieves an ... more inner landscape converted by breath into the rock equivalent of poetry. Rarely has a voice sounded so authoritative, so unapologetic in its disclosures, so sure of its direction in going home into song,” - British poet Jeremy Reed less
